Vertex form to factored form

Expand & Simplify, then factor

Y = 2(x - 6)^2 + 5

Y = 2(x - 6) (x - 6) + 5

Y = (2x - 12) (x - 6) + 5

Y = 2x^2 - 12x - 12x + 72 + 5

Y = 2x^2 - 24x + 77

Y = 2x^2 - 24x + 77

Y = (2x -11) (x -7)

Example

Factor

Vertex Form

Standard Form

Factored Form

Do the exponent first, so (x - 6)^2 would be (x - 6) (x - 6)

Distribute the 2 to the terms in the first bracket

Expand and simplify

Factor the equation
