Common Factoring

Example 1:

Find a common factor in the expression. The common factor could also include variables. Take all the common factors out of the expression and put a bracket around the rest. Ex. 2x + 8         2(x + 4) the common factor in this expression is 2, so you take 2 out and put a bracket around the rest.

1. Identify the common factors

2 ( 2 goes even with all the numbers)

h^2 ( When you factor h^2 out and then expand it. You would get the same answer.

2. Bring all the common factors outside and put brackets around the rest of the expression.

3. Check if your answer is right by expanding and simplifying

Example 2:

1. Identify the common factors

=

There are no other common factors except for (x - 3).

2. Bring all the common factors outside and put brackets around the rest of the expression.

So you take (x - 3) out of the expression because they are common factors. Then put the rest on the other side.

3. Check if your answer is right by expanding and simplifying
